Brief history of cannabis in Italy... and in the world.
Italy and cannabis have a long history of shared successes, the production of Italian hemp (among the best in the world for quality) was a source of pride and profit in the years before prohibition, to give just one example the rope fibers used in the navy they were appreciated and used all over the globe.
In the middle of the last century a campaign aimed at demolishing and demonizing cannabis began in the United States. The force and violence and the subsequent clashes that occurred due to this resolution are known to all, just think of the ippy movement of the immediately following years, however the reasons that gave rise to all this are less clear, we could hypothesize some but despite the number of hemp enthusiasts and people who from those years to the present day have tried to make transparent what has been deliberately made opaque, having an exact reason still remains difficult.
They were years of turmoil and boom, the automotive industry was growing enormously, chemistry and oil were the paths to follow, in those years Italy also did its part by inventing a new material: "plastic" for which as in our best traditions we decided not to take credit for it for posterity (a bit like the PC but that's a whole other story). It is the period of "great" men who made history (even if it would be better to say that they decided it for personal interests) such as Dupont (the chemical giant) and Ford (the assembly line man) who contributed not least together with the American government and in solidarity with those we like to call allies or... "accomplices" in making sure that cannabis became something else: Marijuana, oh yes because you have to change the name of something if you want it to become the devil since until then it had been cultivated regularly with great satisfaction. It seems simple but the truth is always the simplest thing, investments were certainly made to ensure that the thing was universally accepted with campaigns at all possible levels: cinema, press, demonstrations, criminalisation, but also subliminal messages, all subsidized by abundant prospects given by a world devoid of a precious and free resource based on enormous supplies of synthetic materials and fuels but also medicines and beyond.
Today we live in a slightly different world in which the need to find alternative sources and the very difficult conquest of the new dominant markets, water above all, is making sure that even cannabis is starting to have a new life again. In the United States, as expected, the possibility of cultivating and using hemp for useful uses and in some areas even for recreational purposes is becoming increasingly widespread, it is a new world even if the same ones are always in charge.
... the American Declaration of Independence, pictured here, was written on paper derived from?
Dutch paper obtained from cannabis!
