Autoflowering: brief history, characteristics, which to choose and why
Autoflowering plants are relatively new to the cannabis landscape. The father of all autoflowering plants is Joint Doctor's, a Canadian breeder who a few years ago produced the first plant and put the first regular Low Ryder seeds on the market. Few of us remember the story because at the time there were only a few dozen of us in Italy dealing with this work. From an article reported by soft secret of that year, it was we at Dois who strongly requested the importation from our trusted distributor. We were therefore the first retailer in Italy to have an autoflowering plant in the catalogue. 10 regular seeds were sold for €45. The rest is today's history and the rapid evolution of an announced success.
In short, the autoflowering plants resulting from crossing with the Ruderalis strain are timed plants, they do not follow the photoperiod and after a very short growth phase (from 10 to 20 days depending on the genetics) they begin flowering. They therefore seem to be the answer to everything, but this is not really the case.
Due to its characteristics, an Autoflowering plant requires more careful care and ideal conditions compared to a classic photoperiodic one so as not to irremediably compromise the result.
In fact, the lack of a real growth phase makes it impossible to recover from stress and problems, resulting in the flowering of a plant that is substantially too small and poorly structured to be able to produce a product of adequate quality and quantity.
Although autoflowering plants can be cultivated 12 months a year, it is preferable to ensure that the climate and lighting conditions are within acceptable parameters. Too cold or excessive heat are in any case enemies of these plants.
We always recommend extreme care when using these genetics because they are very sensitive to stress and delicate. To obtain good results it is essential to take all possible care and try to have ideal conditions.
Autoflowering plants have a total lifespan that varies from 45 days up to 80 days, measurements and production are closely related to this. Generally speaking, the growth phase takes 2/3 weeks and is the most important phase for this type of plant.
